BIKETOBERFESTIVAL was a fine chance to get together with family and friends, give away some great prizes, and make a substantial contribution to the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps bike unit. We thank Captain Lynch and his crew for displaying the first response bikes and vehicular equipment, and for being here to answer questions about the Corps emergency services.

A good time was had by all and we’ll do it again next year at the new location. Kudos to all who contributed to the event and raffle. Thanks to Havre de Grace Magazine’s The Meeting Place for the continued promotional support.

BIKETOBERFESTIVAL IS SATURDAY!

BIKETOBERFESTIVAL is this coming Saturday, 1-8 pm, at the “old” shop at 817 Juniata Street (at Erie). The posters are up, the email’s are out, we can’t wait to meet up with everyone and enjoy a great outing.

Area bass player Paul Maguire is putting together his R&B friends for some delicious musical sets. Some of the popular DC jazzers from our last big party may stop by, too, led by vocalist Marianna Previty. Live music begins about 2:00 and continues through nightfall.

The main raffle prize, the SUN Ruskin 700c 21-spd Sport Hybrid (a $425 value), is here, assembled, test-ridden, and ready for the afternoon drawing. This real cool bike is going to make some lucky raffle ticket buyer very, very happy. The baskets full of bike accessories ($200 worth of goodies apiece) and $100 family bike rental gift certificates are ready for winning, too. Raffle tickets are just five bucks each–buy more to better your chances. All raffle proceeds to HdG Ambulance Corps bike unit.

Chef Scott will be slinging spicey brats. The 1948 cooler will be overflowing with Octoberfest brews and other refreshments. We’ll have a few games and contests, too, to test stamina and wit.

We hope everyone can come and feast with us and hear our plans and make suggestions for the new downtown shop coming very soon.

Biller’s Bikes is Moving to Downtown Havre de Grace!

To All Our Customers, Friends and Patrons:

Biller’s Bikes is moving to historic downtown Havre de Grace overlooking the Chesapeake Bay! It will be a busy winter putting together a world-class shop featuring new and used bike sales, popular parts and accessories, upgraded repair, bike rental and trail services. Everything the Chesapeake cycling and sport enthusiast could ask for! (And our great prices will remain.)

We’ll bring more news here soon, or drop by BIKETOBERFESTIVAL on October 18 (at Juniata Street) and find out more. We shuttled riders over the bridge, assisted with hundreds of rental outings, and put almost 500 bikes back on the road this season (refurbishments and used-bike sales). We’d like to thank all our patrons and supporters personally for making our 2008 season such a profoundly rewarding experience.

Biller’s Bikes “Fall Classics” Sale

This September we’ll be selling a number of refurbished vintage mens and womens’ adult single, three-speed, and derailleur bikes. Demand for adult classics was so high at our August round-up sale that we decided to offer customers more.

The bikes will be under the canopy on the patio and tagged with prices. (Rental bikes on the deck are not for sale.) As always, used bikes are well-refurbished, but sold as-is with all-sales-final.

There are townbikes (single, 3-speed and 10-speed), hand-brake and coaster brake bikes, and a few pretty fancy multi-gear classics. Bikes include Trek, Peugeot, Huffy, Schwinn, Columbia and Mongoose, among others.

First Havre de Grace Bikeshop (1899)

Havre de Grace has a long tradition of sport bicycling. This article is a 1937 look-back at HdG’s first bikeshop, founded in 1899. The shop was located where the old Masonic Building is today at Rochambeau Triangle.

The owner, Harvey Bowden, set many cycling records. He broke a previous New York City to Washington, DC bike speed record, making the 242-mile trip in 26 hours, 34 minutes. Try that on dirt roads on your Trek!

Juniata Street Arch Wheel Sign Invites

Folks parking on or driving by our Juniata Street side know the locally-famous 1840 brick arch of our building’s “Sallyport,” a 19th century Philadelphia townhome conveyance. Now the arch frames a new spinning bicycle wheel-sign that invites you down the sallyport to our busy Erie Street-side: canopy, drive, lawn, parking, office and bicycle deck. Come and visit!
